EC Meeting, September 16, 2024
Ten out of 15 EC members are in attendance.
Niklas leads a discussion on awards. He is forming the awards committees for the upcoming cycle in November. He will be sharing the potential list of committee members on Slack for EC to review. We discuss eligibility criteria for nominations, to be implemented in a future cycle.
Ignacio shares conference updates. We discuss how we can support conferences that have recently come to us with various needs or complicated situations (e.g., finances, signing contracts, site selection and co-location), and make suggestions for next steps on some of these discussions.
As part of the conferences updates, Neha brings up the PCS breakdown during the CHI 2025 deadline due to number of submissions. We note that PCS capacity will need to be a topic of discussion when we renew the contract.
Jeni leads a discussion on chapters, including how to get more volunteer support for chapters, complications of current chapter naming conventions, and the need to differentiate between chapters and regions on the website. Neha notes that we’ll be doing open calls to welcome more volunteers. The latter two require more discussion, but chapters versus regions can be differentiated on the website in the short term.
On the topic of committees, Neha notes that the SIGGRAPH treasurer is committed to meeting with SIG treasurers regarding financial planning, and this could be a helpful resource as many SIGs are struggling financially.
Luigi provides updates on who has applied to the open calls for Vice-President and Adjunct Chair roles, noting that there is still time to internally nominate people.
We close with a discussion of when to schedule future EC meetings. Adriana quickly notes that X is getting blocked in more countries, and BlueSky might be a good alternative that SIGCHI should set up. Naveena will follow up on this.
