December 15, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm EST

Shaddi Hasan
Shaddi is an incoming assistant professor of computer science at Virginia Tech, starting in Fall 2021. I completed my PhD at UC Berkeley in 2019, where I worked in the Technology and Infrastructure for Emerging Regions group with Eric Brewer. His research interests are in networks, ICTD, HCI, and distributed systems.

His research addresses fundamental scale and flexibility challenges faced by service provider networks. In 2014, he co-founded Endaga (press), which joined Facebook in 2015. I am currently a software engineer at Facebook Connectivity.

Jane Coffin and Mark Buell
Jane Coffin is responsible for the Internet Society’s Internet Growth project teams. The Internet Growth project teams are focused on Community Networks, Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) & interconnection, peering, and community development, and a new critical project on measuring the health of the Internet. Her work also focuses on access and development strategy, where she and other ISOC colleagues and partners focus on coordination of collaborative strategies for expanding Internet infrastructure, access, and related capacities in emerging economies with partners.

Mark Buell is the Regional Bureau Director, North America. In this role, Mark oversees the Internet Society’s engagement activities in Canada and the United States.

Kanchana Kanchanasut
Dr. Kanchana Kanchanasut brought the Internet to Thailand and was actively involved in many Internet connectivity initiatives in other Southeast Asian countries, championing the idea of email, and later the Internet, in that region in the 1980s.

She directs the Internet Education and Research Laboratory at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Thailand, where she is also a professor of Computer Science at its School of Engineering and Technology. She has  been Acting Vice President for Research at AIT since April 2013.

Josephine Dionisio
Josephine C. Dionisio is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Sociology, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of the Philippines Diliman, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts Degrees in Sociology. She has engaged in several collaborative interdisciplinary research projects on technology and social development, which seek to build inclusive rural industrialization. Her research projects in the past include the development of village-level coconut processing plants in poor rural communities, and the provision of Internet access to remote rural schools. More recently, her research involvement includes looking into the risks and uncertainties related to the transition to low carbon energy options for off-grid areas, the development of village-level water remediation plants in areas with arsenic-contaminated water resources, and the deployment of community cellular networks in geographically isolated rural areas.
