Resources for HCI Educators
The goal is to determine what resources could be made
available that would make it easier for individuals to fit HCI into
existing courses or to add new courses/concentrations/degrees.
We have a working group that consists of individuals from across North
America as well as people from Australia and various countries in
Europe. A complete list of the
people in this group is at the end of
this message, so if you have anything to contribute to this project
please get in touch with me, or someone else on this list.
- People that have recently expanded HCI offerings and can tell us
what obstacles they ran into and what would have made things easier.
- People that are interested in expanding HCI offerings and can share
their current experiences with us, including helping us identify
resources that would make things easier.
The following is a list of some of the things we are referring to when
we say 'resource.' This is not an exhaustive list, so if you can add
other things let us know!
- course outlines for the different approaches taken by different
faculty. This should include some background information so we can
understand why, when, and how well this approach has worked.
- project ideas including background information about why, when, and
how well it worked.
- degree outlines, concentration outlines, etc.
- is financial assistance needed to help develop the
course/concentration/degree and get it started?
- good books
- A list of reports on HCI Curricula (SIGCHI etc)
- Web pages with partial or full course content online, including
student exercises (e.g.,Saul Greenberg, U of Calgary)
- A list of good published papers that cover various topics
- A list of all relevant journals & conference proceedings available,
especially those available on the internet, that could be accessed
by students.
- A list of all relevant professional societies and chapters
- A list of all Conferences in the field
- A list of all Web pages devoted to HCI that would be
useful for teachers, and those for students (e.g., Perlman)
- A list of listservs (e.g., UTEST) & usenet groups related to the topic
- A list of online job-listings (to ensure students would be getting
the required training)
- A list of existing User Interface standards (Windows 3.1, Windows'95,
IBM CUA, Apple, OSF/Motif...)
- A list of prototyping tools, and user-skill requirements for each
- A list of various usability testing tools
- A set of "design dilemmas" that can be used in the course
(interactively)
- A set of bad-design examples (to be used interactively)
- A set of good-design examples (to be used interactively)
- Design rational artifacts from real projects in industry
- A comprehensive list of videotapes covering various topics
- A listing of available student internships in industry
- A list of available student scholarships, awards
- example syllabi
- example tests
- tool evaluations
- outlines of alternative approaches for fitting HCI into existing
courses
- corporate connections to help find 'real' projects
- hardware to support the courses
- software to support the courses
So, if you have anything you can contribute to this effort, we would
appreciate hearing from you. I'm willing to act as the contact point,
but feel free to contact anyone on the list at the end of this email.
I hope I hear from (many of) you soon!
