The conference hotel is the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre, located in the heart of Vancouver. The hotel is an award winning 4 Diamond property, located on Burrard St. between Helmcken and Nelson St. It is within walking distance to a variety of eclectic restaurant choices, Pacific Centre shopping malls, Granville and Robson streets, funky Yaletown, diverse coffee shops, IGA Market Place grocery store, movies, live theatre, nightclubs, and the wonderful Pacific seawalls.

All guestrooms have High Speed Internet access and telephones with direct dial telephone lines and in-room safes.

A special reduced conference rate of $150.00 (CAD) has been negotiated with the hotel. Extra person charge per room is $30 (CAD). To get this rate, you must make your reservation directly with the hotel on or before Friday, October 17, 2003 and mention that you are with the ACM Conference on Universal Usability (CUU). The hotel has several restaurants varying from simple to fine dining: Starbucks ($), Café One, Bar One, Cracked Ice and Indigo Bar & Bistro ($$$).

  • There is one accessible room one every floor of the north and south towers of the hotel. Handicap parking spots are available.
  • All meeting rooms and public washrooms are wheelchair accessible.

    Day Trips

    Day trips to Whistler, Victoria, Vancouver Island can be arranged by the hotel or yourself.


    Transportation

  • Taxis: Drop rate is $2.30 and $!.31 per km travelled. Many cabs are larger and will accommodate wheelchairs.

  • Accessible Local City Buses: Our Translink transit system is one of the first in Canada to introduce wheelchair lift-equipped and low floor buses into regular service. Each accessible bus can carry two wheelchairs or scooters. As well as wheelchairs and scooters, this service provides assistance for anyone who may have any condition that makes boarding difficult.


    Passengers must have the ability to manoeuvre wheelchairs and scooters safely and effectively. People who need assistance to board or exit must be accompanied by an attendant.
    Fares for 1 zone area is $2.00 to 4 zone are of $4.00. Vancouver area is a one zone. Richmond, Burnaby, North Shore are two zone areas. Book of 10 x $2.00 tickets is $18.00

  • Accessible SeaBus: Boarding on the SeaBus at Waterfront Station or from Lonsdale Quay is basically the same. The difference is that you access Waterfront Station by an elevator located at the north end of the skywalk. Exiting the elevator on the boarding level puts you back in the pedestrian flow towards the "Fare Paid Zone". Please note that tidal changes affect the ramp grades.

    Both SeaBus terminals have double-wide doors through which people in wheelchairs or scooters, or using crutches, can easily pass. Wheelchairs and scooters can be positioned just inside the doors on either side of the SeaBus, either in the aisle or in front of a vacant seat. Face front or back and lock brakes.

  • Medical Facilities

    St Paul’s Hospital is across the street and will handle emergencies 24 hours.

    Directions to the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre Hotel

    From Vancouver International Airport

    All prices are in Canadian Dollars.

  • By Airporter Bus: (approx 40 minutes) $12.00 one way $18.00 roundtrip.
  • By Taxi: (approx 20-25 minutes depending on time of day) $25.00 one way.
  • By Airport Limousine: (approx 20-25 minutes) $35.00 one way.
  • By Rental Car: (approx 20-25 minutes)
  • 1. Follow the signs to Vancouver, over the Arthur Laing Bridge

    2. Take the Granville Street exit off the Arthur Laing Bridge and follow Granville Street for approximately 10 miles (16 km)

    3. Cross the Granville Street Bridge into the downtown core and take the Seymour Street exit. Seymour is a one way street heading north.

    4. Follow Seymour Street to Helmcken

    5. Turn left on Helmcken and continue to the end of the street (three blocks). The Wall Centre complex comprises two tall blue glass buildings located on the right hand corner of Helmcken and Burrard, directly across the street from St. Paul’s Hospital.


    Driving from Washington

    1. Follow Interstate Highway #5 across the border into Canada. This highway automatically turns into Highway #99.

    2. Highway #99 automatically becomes Oak Street as you pass through Richmond. Cross the Oak Street Bridge and follow Oak Street for approximately 30 blocks to West 41st Avenue

    3. Turn left on West 41st Avenue. Follow W 41st Avenue for approximately five blocks to Granville Street.

    4. Turn right on Granville Street.

    5. Cross the Granville Street Bridge into the downtown core and take the Seymour Street exit. Seymour is a one way street heading north.

    6. Follow Seymour Street to Helmcken

    7. Turn left on Helmcken and continue to the end of the street (three blocks). The Wall Centre complex comprises two tall blue-glass buildings located on the right hand corner of Helmcken and Burrard, directly across the street from St. Paul’s Hospital


    There are two entrances to the hotel driveway and gardens, each off of Helmcken and Burrard.

  • Valet parking is available in the driveway at the hotel entrance.
  • For self-parking, follow Helmcken two blocks west and turn right (north) on Hornby Street. You can access the parkade immediately on the left hand side of the street.

    Obtaining a visa to enter Canada

    Anyone traveling to Canada with a United States passport does not need to obtain an entry visa. Nationals of some countries well need one, however. In such cases you may be required to provide details that will include some form of letter from ACM. To obtain a letter from ACM, send an email to Giorgie Millamena, (millamena@hq.acm.org) , with the following information:
