ACM/SIGCHI VOLUNTEERS RECEPTION

Wednesday, 19 May 1999, Following ACM SIGCHI Business Meeting
ACM SIGCHI appreciates the contributions of time, energy, and resources given by the many volunteers who participate in running the SIGCHI conferences and organization. Volunteers are the life blood of our field and truly deserve special recognition. If you are one of the many volunteers who have served on committees, reviewed papers, served on a task force, worked for your local SIG, or otherwise volunteered your time and energy to SIGCHI, you are invited to attend this celebration!

THE COMMONS

Located in the East Hall of the convention center, The Commons is the place to meet people and browse through the Exhibits. You will also find the Internet Room, Posters, and the Informal SIGs sign-up sheets. Comfortable seating areas for socializing, food, and beverages make this the perfect place to meet with old or new friends, rendezvous with your accompanying person, or just relax between sessions.

INFORMAL SIGS

Informal Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are informal meetings where small groups can discuss specific topics of common interest. Organizing a lunch-time informal SIG is a great way to guarantee yourself interesting lunch companions. Anyone can organize an informal SIG and anyone can attend. The Conference provides meeting space for these 90 minute meetings. Sign-up sheets for organizers are located in The Commons, where the Informal SIGs schedule will be posted.

INTERNET ACCESS

Internet access is available in The Commons.

WALK-IN DEMONSTRATIONS

CHI 99 participants interested in showing their work in progress, either live or on video, are encouraged to use the CHI 99 Walk-In Demonstration area. A limited number of Walk-In Demonstrations may be scheduled in advance with the Demonstrations Co-Chairs. All other slots will be available on site on a first-come, first-served basis. No advance submissions are required for this event.

CHI 99 will provide a flip chart and some basic equipment including an IBM PC and Apple Macintosh (both with built-in audio support) and an NTSC VCR. No external speakers, external CD-ROM drives, or ZIP drives will be provided. Participants with more extensive needs should bring their own hardware and software.

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS

Student Volunteers are integral to the success of each CHI conference. Students from all disciplines are invited to be part of the most exciting event in the HCI field. A wide variety of positions are available at the conference. Many of the duties are not glamorous, but all provide opportunities to interact with CHI 99 contributors, attendees, and committee members from all parts of the world and from diverse areas of the HCI community.

In return for 20 hours of work during the conference, volunteers receive free registration, some meals, a Conference Reception ticket, a T shirt, and an invitation to the volunteer thank-you event. Student volunteers are responsible for their own housing, travel to and from Pittsburgh, and those meals not provided. Reduced housing rates are available for confirmed student volunteers.

Volunteers must be undergraduate, Master's, or doctoral students during the 1998 -1999 academic year. All students, regardless of discipline, are encouraged to apply. No experience is required. We are looking for enthusiastic, intelligent, reliable people. Volunteers must commit to a total of 20 volunteer hours of work at the conference.

For More Information For an application and more information, please see www.acm.org/sigchi/chi99/call/stuvols.html. While the deadline for applying is 15 April 1999, there is already a waiting list.
