Organization Overviews
Deadline:
13 September 1999
Organization Overviews are summaries of HCI work taking place in institutions, organizations, or groups. The emphasis is on the circumstances under which work is done, the underlying goals, policies, and organizational background, and perspectives of past, present and future HCI efforts. Of interest is the big picture: how did a group come into being; how do the participants influence each other as well as other groups with whom they are affiliated; the group's plans and visions for the future; and the basis for these plans. Organization Overviews thus stand in contrast to presentations which spotlight one or two technically or scientifically interesting results.
Attendees of the presentations should be able to see the shared perspectives between groups despite different cultural, organizational, and geographical backgrounds in order to foster future collaborations and affect work within HCI in the upcoming century.
Overviews may describe HCI work in university, corporate, or government research groups or institutions; product development or consultancy organizations; countries or geographical regions; collaborative efforts involving several groups or organizations; or partnerships of different types of groups, or groups cooperating across geographical, political, or cultural boundaries
Review Criteria
Submissions will be reviewed independently by a multidisciplinary group drawn from industry and academia. Reviews will consider the level of interest that members of the HCI community will have in the work, the extent to which the overview informs the CHI community of current HCI activity worldwide, the ways in which future HCI innovations are envisaged, and its potential for stimulating co-operation and collaboration within the HCI community.
Format
Prepare a two-page camera-ready extended abstract of the Organization Overview. It must be in the Conference Publications Format. We strongly prefer an additional electronic submission as a PDF file by email to the Send To address shown. This is optional, but will greatly assist the reviewing process. Prepare the electronic version of the extended abstract following the instructions in the section on Electronic submissions. The extended abstract should include:
- HCI domains addressed by the organization's work
- focus, themes, major processes, organizational setting, history, and future plans
- people involved (e.g. number and backgrounds)
- specific projects and/or special approaches
- key publications, products, or other results
Upon Acceptance
Authors will be notified by 7 November 1999. Extended abstracts of accepted submissions will be published in the CHI 2000 Extended Abstracts. Author Kits containing detailed instructions on how to submit camera-ready materials for publication will be sent with notifications of acceptance. These materials are due by 13 December 1999.
At the Conference
At the conference, the overview should be presented by a major participant in the work and based on the material described in the extended abstract. Organization Overviews are 30 minute presentations, including 5 minutes for questions.
